Overseas Work

Erskine Chambers meeting room

The scope of Chambers' work goes far beyond the UK, with members of Chambers being regularly instructed in matters from all over the world including Commonwealth and former Commonwealth and European Community jurisdictions. Much of Chambers’ European work arises from the current trend towards cross-border amalgamation and reconstruction and pan-European joint ventures and distributions agreements.

The type of businesses on which Chambers advise and the clients for whom they act invariably raise questions of international law and/or involve disputes in other parts of the world. Members of Chambers are frequently sought out as experts or advocates in other jurisdictions, including the United States, Hong Kong, Bermuda, the Cayman Islands, Malaysia, Singapore, the Bahamas and the British Virgin Islands.

Members of Chambers are also regularly instructed in international arbitrations and have a wealth of experience in this regard.

The South Africa Connection

A developing feature of Chambers' work is its expanding connection with South Africa. Leon Kuschke (a leading South African silk specialising in commercial, company and insolvency law), now practises in England but is still much sought after in South Africa. In 1998 he was leading counsel in the first demutualisation of a life insurer undertaken in South Africa, then thought to be the largest commercial scheme sanctioned in the courts there.

Overseas Instructions

Overseas parties wishing to instruct members of Chambers are invited to contact Senior Clerk Mike Hannibal in the first instance.
